Crushed Leaf-Lined Trails

So dry after many weeks without rain
Gentle hush leaves in the late summer breeze
Chipmunk gulps in the distance
Chipmunk and mole holes surrounded by dirt at limestone steps and fallen logs
Once creek, now bed of rocks with tiny trickle
Sweet pitter of leaves falling softly to the floor
Lots of yellow melting into green with hints of orange
Crushed leaf-lined trails
Desiccating spicebush and pawpaw leaves
Dry forest floor grasses and shrubs
Chipmunk and squirrel posses scurry and scamper for nuts
Dry, collapsed ferns wait flatly for rain
Crunchy Prairie whispers eagerly for rain
Bees work diligently on flowering goldenrod
Spot a purple aster deep within the field
-God’s not pissed off
Occasional ringing backdrop of crickets
Drought doesn’t stop nature from moving
Chipmunk gulps echo in the distance
